Cancellation

The story behind Cancellation is a fascinating glimpse into how musical ideas can take unexpected paths. Originally, this piece was part of a set of compositions created in 1975 by J. Crocker, Kailing, and Steve Kipner, intended for a project called Bandana. This band, formed by Peter Beckett and J.C. Crowley, had several songs ready, but they never managed to release them on an album. The journey of Cancellation, however, did not end there.

After a name change from Riff Raff to Bandana to avoid confusion with another British group, the band focused on creating new material. They spent time rehearsing on Sunset Boulevard and shared their music with industry figures like Bill Halverson, Paul Simon, and Phil Ramone. In 1976, Steve Kipner left the group, and J.C. Crowley, from Texas, took his place. It was at the ABC Studios on Beverly Boulevard where, in front of producer Phil Ramone, they performed songs that would later become part of Player's first album, including Movin'Up, Melanie, and, of course, Cancellation. Despite an agreement with the GTO record label, the project did not take off, and no album was released at that time. The song has a duration of 4:07.
