More about José Asunción Flores
Biography
War took him away from his workshop. In 1932, with the country in conflict during the Chaco War, Flores enlisted in the Paraguayan Army and ended up firing machine guns in Boquerón. There are no records of him composing there, but that year marked a turning point: after the front, he went into exile in Buenos Aires. From there, guarania ceased to be a local sound to become regional. He directed the Orquesta Ortiz Guerrero, recorded discs with Odeón, and took his music to radios and theaters. Even in Moscow he left his mark: in the 1940s, he recorded part of his work with Soviet musicians, as if guarania needed to cross oceans to be understood. But not everything was success. His closeness to the Paraguayan Communist Party put him in the spotlight, and exile became a constant. Even so, in 1944, the Paraguayan government declared India the «national song», a belated but definitive recognition. Flores kept composing until the end, even venturing into symphonic music, as if his curiosity knew no limits. He died in Buenos Aires in 1972, but his guarania lives on: it does not sound like an anthem, but like a whisper that reminds us that music can also be a country.
