Félix Pérez Cardozo

Félix Pérez Cardozo, originally from Hyaty, is a central figure in Paraguayan music, particularly in the harp realm. His distinctive style and technical skill made him a benchmark in the interpretation and composition of works for this instrument. Throughout his career, he was part of a trio alongside Ampelio Villalba and Diosnel Chase, and received support from poet Pedro José Carlés, which led him to move to Asunción in 1928. There, he performed at folk music festivals and in various venues, quickly gaining the public's attention. In 1931, Félix moved to Buenos Aires, where he developed most of his artistic career. His charismatic personality and dedication to music led him to compose tirelessly, often sacrificing his sleep to finish his works.

His unique style and compositions, mostly for harp, allowed him to rise rapidly in the music scene. In 1945, he formed his own group and stood out for his virtuosic performances, earning great recognition in Buenos Aires and throughout the Río de la Plata region.Among his most memorable contributions is the famous song «Guyra campana», based on an onomatopoeic motif and widely disseminated internationally. Although considered a «folk motif» in the history of Paraguayan music, it is undeniable that Pérez Cardozo’s final version of this piece reflects his talent. Additionally, his influence on the evolution of the Paraguayan harp was significant, as he introduced new techniques, such as expanding the sonic spectrum with more strings and hand independence, enriching the accompaniment of Paraguayan polka.Félix also left a mark on music through compositions inspired by prominent poets, such as Víctor Montórfano and Emiliano R.
