Non‐Stop Erotic Cabaret

When Soft Cell released Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret in 1981, they had already hit upon a formula that resonated. The duo, formed by Marc Almond and David Ball, met in 1977 at Leeds Polytechnic, and their common interest was to create catchy melodies with a dark touch, something like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire but with more lyrics. This first album, which would become a commercial success, contained ten tracks that explored that distinctive sound.

About the album

Non‐Stop Erotic Cabaret, according to DoReSol

Within Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, there are songs that stand out for their impact. The hit "Tainted Love", a cover that became a number one in the UK, is perhaps the best known. But we also find others that reached high positions on the charts, such as "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" and "Bedsitter", both within the top 4. The album itself managed to be among the twenty best-selling between 1981 and 1984, demonstrating the public's connection with the duo's sonic proposal.

Soft Cell's music has transcended its era, with artists like David Gray, Coil, and Nine Inch Nails covering their songs. Even "Memorabilia" was recognized for laying the groundwork for the synthesizer-focused techno genre. Despite separating in 1984, the duo reunited in 2001 to continue creating and performing, eventually offering a farewell concert in London on September 30, 2018, although they did not rule out future collaborations or recordings outside the UK.
