The story behind

Frustration, according to DoReSol

In Frustration, Soft Cell delves into an atmosphere that, while sharing the characteristic synthesizer base of the 1980s, explores a particular tension. The song is built on the interaction between the vocals and electronic elements, creating a sense of unease that moves away from more direct melodies. The way Marc Almond and David Ball worked together, one with vocals and the other with synthesizers, allowed them to explore themes that went beyond romance, delving into darker aspects of life.

The duo, formed in the early 80s, moved within the scene known as New Romantic and New Wave, but were also associated with a more "futuristic" current, sharing space with names like Depeche Mode and Human League. This inclination towards the somber also connected Soft Cell with the gothic music scene that was beginning to take shape. Throughout their career, some of their compositions have been reinterpreted by other artists, such as Marilyn Manson and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, demonstrating the resonance of their sound.
