The story behind
Bedsitter, according to DoReSol
The song Bedsitter, born from the collaboration between Marc Almond and David Ball, immerses us in the depths of the early 80s London nightlife scene. Released as a single in early November 1981 by the Some Bizzare Records label, this 3:36 synth-pop piece, in its single version, reached number 4 on the UK charts. Critic Jon Savage has even described it as one of the most outstanding compositions of the 1980s, and Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys included it in a personal selection for The Guardian in 2006.
Bedsitter is part of the album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret and was produced by Mike Thorne. The duo Soft Cell, formed by Marc Almond on vocals and David Ball on synthesizers, was characterized by exploring themes ranging from love and romance to darker aspects of life, addressing issues such as perversion, drugs, and murder. They are considered a benchmark of synth-pop, emerging in the New Romantic and New Wave era, and sharing a sound with other artists like Depeche Mode and Human League. The B-side of this single is the song Facility Girls.
