I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You

When Aretha Franklin arrived at Atlantic Records in 1967, she was seeking a new direction. Her first work for the label, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, released on March 10 of that year, became a turning point. She left behind the jazz standards albums from her previous phase and immersed herself in a sound that would define her. The recording took place between January and February 1967, split between FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and Atlantic Recording Studios in New York. Producer Jerry Wexler led this crucial phase.

About the album

I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, according to DoReSol

The album stood out for its raw energy and Franklin's vocal power. Songs like "Respect", a cover that became her personal signature and reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, or the title track "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)", which reached the top 10, marked the beginning of her commercial success. The record achieved second place on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top R&B Albums chart for 14 weeks. The production presented a particular challenge: differences in recording speed between the Alabama and New York studios caused slight detuning between the tracks recorded in each location, something the producer later regretted.

I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You was not only a success at the time, but its influence endured. It was included in important lists such as Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time", where it has appeared in different editions with prominent positions, and in "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die". Despite some initial criticism regarding the lack of versatility of the accompanying musicians, the album was re-evaluated over time and is today considered a fundamental work.
