Demon Days

Gorillaz's second studio effort, Demon Days, arrived in 2005, bringing with it a darker and more reflective sonic palette than their debut album. Recorded at Studio 13 in London, this record delves into an amalgamation of styles ranging from alternative rock and hip-hop to trip-hop and art rock. The inspiration for this sonic journey, according to Damon Albarn, stemmed from a train ride through rural areas of China, an experience he translated into an album concept exploring a world in a "state of night," touching on post-9/11 themes and apocalyptic visions.

About the album

Demon Days, according to DoReSol

This album is distinguished by the participation of a notable list of collaborators, including De La Soul, Neneh Cherry, Martina Topley-Bird, Roots Manuva, MF Doom, Ike Turner, Bootie Brown, Shaun Ryder, and actor Dennis Hopper. Of the tracklist, Feel Good Inc. became a resounding success, topping the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart for eight weeks and earning a Grammy Award in 2006. Another standout cut was Dare, which reached number one in the UK, and Dirty Harry and the double A-side El Mañana / Kids with Guns were also released.

For the promotion of Demon Days, instead of a traditional tour, Gorillaz opted for a series of live performances in Manchester and New York, dubbed Demon Days Live. In these shows, the album was performed in its entirety, featuring the presence of almost all the guest artists. The performances were characterized by the band's silhouette on stage, accompanied by visuals created by Jamie Hewlett. The album had a very positive commercial reception, surpassing the sales of their previous record and consolidating Gorillaz as a serious musical project. In 2023, Demon Days was included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
