The story behind

Last Living Souls, according to DoReSol

The song Last Living Souls, which opens the album Demon Days, immediately immerses us in a dense and reflective atmosphere. From the first beat, a very marked sonic duality is perceived: a rhythmic base from a simple drum machine contrasts with melancholic acoustic melodies. This tension between the electronic and the organic is a recurring theme on the album. The lyrics evoke a sense of internal and external struggle, as if it were a hymn to life amidst a desolate panorama, a reflection of existence before the inevitable departure.

The recording of Demon Days took place at Studio 13 in London, United Kingdom. The album was primarily produced by Danger Mouse, with the collaboration of Jason Cox and James Dring, in addition to the band itself. For Last Living Souls, Simon Tong participated on additional guitar, while Sally Jackson and Prabjote Osahn contributed the violins, Amanda Drummond and Stella Page the violas, Isabelle Dunn the cello, and Al Mobbs and Emma Smith the double bass. The mixing of the track was handled by Jason Cox, Danger Mouse, and Gorillaz themselves. The album, released in May 2005 in Japan and the United Kingdom, is characterized by its diversity of styles, fusing alternative rock, hip-hop, and trip-hop, with a generally darker tone than previous works.
