Del otro lado del sol

When you dive into Del otro lado del sol, Ricardo Arjona's third work, you encounter a sonic starting point that, although a bit elusive today, holds the seed of what was to come. Released in 1991, this album is a treasure for those seeking the roots of his music. What's particular about this record is that, despite not achieving wide distribution at the time, many of its compositions resonated later in other projects. In fact, several of the pieces that make up Del otro lado del sol were reinterpreted with very different arrangements in later collaborations or compilation albums, giving them new life. Originally, the project was going to be titled Gitano Urbano, but the more evocative image of Del otro lado del sol was ultimately chosen.

About the album

Del otro lado del sol, according to DoReSol

There are songs on this album that became pillars in Arjona's career. A clear example is Te conozco, which has been revisited on countless occasions throughout his different musical stages, appearing in works such as Historias, Vivo, Solo, Quién dijo ayer, and even in a tribute called Arjona Tropical, where he sings it with Alberto. Another piece worth mentioning is Libre; the version you hear here is the original, and three years after this release, in 1994, Ricardo Arjona decided to include that same recording on his album Historias. Qué voy a hacer conmigo also had a journey, appearing on Poquita Ropa, albeit with a very different interpretation from this first take.

The story of Del otro lado del sol has an interesting nuance related to its distribution. Due to a legal dispute with Sony Music over song rights, the material became difficult to obtain shortly after its release. This resulted in few original copies circulating, and the album practically disappeared from the official market. The editions from that year were limited to LP and cassette formats. However, some versions, not authorized by Sony Music and released by independent labels, began to circulate on the Internet, even offering alternative takes of songs like Piel de consumo, Aquí estoy, Gitano Urbano, Libre, Desde la Calle 33, Qué voy a hacer conmigo, and La mujer que no soñé.
