Clics Modernos

When Charly García dove into the creation of Clics Modernos, he did so at a very particular moment in Argentine history, right at the end of the civic-military dictatorship that had marked the country since 1976. This album, released in November 1983, became a turning point for Argentine rock, defining sonic trends that would resonate in the following decades. The music leans towards new wave, but draws from diverse pop nuances, creating a distinctive sound. García, who also handled composition and production, recorded most of the material at New York's Electric Lady studios. For this phase, he enlisted Pedro Aznar, with whom he had already shared projects in Serú Girán, and drummer Casey Scheuerell. However, García opted to largely replace the drum role by using a Roland TR‑808, a resource he had already explored on his previous album, Yendo de la cama al living. The cover art images, which inspired the album's title, come from Richard Hambleton's public art in New York, captured by Uberto Sagramoso.

About the album

Clics Modernos, according to DoReSol

Despite some critics initially underestimating its scope, Clics Modernos has been recognized for its impact and composition, appearing on lists of the best albums from Latin America, including those from Al Borde and Rolling Stone. The album spawned promotional singles and culminated with a performance at Buenos Aires' Luna Park. Among the standout songs from this work are Nos siguen pegando abajo, No soy un extraño, No me dejan salir, Los dinosaurios —a direct reference to those who disappeared during the dictatorship—, Bancate ese defecto, Plateado sobre plateado, and Ojos de video tape. The album's lyrics, often filled with sarcasm and humor, engage with the social and political context of the time, reflecting the transition to democracy.

The production of Clics Modernos took place in New York, where all tracks were recorded and mixed. The album, conceived in the final months of a complex period for Argentina, is notable for its danceable rhythm and new wave style, elements that intertwine with the lyrics to evoke that historical moment of change and hope. The original Mexican version, for example, included Los dinosaurios on one side and Nuevos trapos on the other, with the distinctive "Rock en tu idioma" branding.
