a-ha pubblicò "Take On Me" nel 1984, e la versione originale uscì ad ottobre dello stesso anno. La registrarono con Tony Mansfield e la remixarono con John Ratcliff. Poi, nel 1985, pubblicarono una versione internazionale prodotta da Alan Tarney, che entrò nell'album d'esordio del gruppo, Hunting High and Low. La canzone mescola sintetizzatori con strumenti come chitarra acustica, tastiere e batteria.

La storia dietro

a-ha scrisse Take On Me nel 1983, prima di aver un nome fisso. La canzone cominciò come un'idea di Pål Waaktaar e Magne Furuholmen, che la chiamarono Lesson One e poi All's Well That Ends Well and Moves With the Sun. Alla fine si fermò con il titolo che ha oggi. La voce di Morten Harket cambiò tutto, con quell'inflessione che si insinuò nella melodia. La registrarono a Londra, in uno studio chiamato RG Jones, e la pubblicarono come singolo nel 1984, senza includerla in un album. La versione uscita nel 1985, con la produzione di Alan Tarney, fu quella che divenne un successo. Arrivò al numero uno in diversi paesi, tra cui gli Stati Uniti e la Norvegia. Il video fu fondamentale: utilizzò l'animazione a carboncino, come il rotoscopio, e mescolò scene reali. Fu candidata all'MTV, vinse sei premi e divenne un hit che, secondo alcuni, li fece passare per un one-hit wonder.
