The story behind
Queen is the band behind «We Will Rock You», an arena rock song written by Brian May, the guitarist of the British group. Its structure relies on a rhythmic pattern built with claps and a bass drum, plus a guitar solo performed by May himself. The piece runs for 2:02 and was produced by Queen alongside Mike Stone, recorded at Wessex Sound Studios in London. The song first appeared on 7 October 1977, included on News of the World, Queen's sixth studio album. The corresponding music video was filmed in the backyard of drummer Roger Taylor's house. Released under the EMI label in the United Kingdom and Elektra in the United States, the single came out with «We Will Rock You» as the A-side of «We Are the Champions»; in the United States both songs shared a double A-side. Between 1980 and 1981, the track was released as a single in various countries. During that period it reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and number four on the Billboard chart in the United States. It also entered the top 10 in Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway, and the top 15 in Germany, Austria and Sweden. Additionally, the song reached number one in France. «We Will Rock You» ranks 330th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. It has been covered, sampled and remixed by more than 50 artists, and has appeared in films, series and television programmes, commercials and radio broadcasts. Together with «We Are the Champions», for more than three decades it served as a rock anthem in stadiums, sporting events, tournaments, football World Cups and the Olympic Games, associated with the idea of victory for a team, organisation or athlete. Both songs were often played together at the end of Queen's concerts, and are sometimes broadcast back to back on the radio, following the order of the album. The piece was present on every Queen tour from the News of the World Tour of 1977 to the Magic Tour of 1986, which was the band's last tour with Freddie Mercury. It was almost always performed in the antepenultimate position, followed by «We Are the Champions»; on the Magic Tour, «Friends Will Be Friends» was inserted between the two. It also formed part of Queen's performance at Live Aid in 1985, within the 20-minute slot allotted to the group. At the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert held in 1992, the song was performed at the end of the event by Axl Rose, frontman of Guns N' Roses. Years later it continued in the live repertoire of Queen + Paul Rodgers between 2005 and 2009, and of Queen + Adam Lambert from 2012 onwards. During the Closing Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games, it was performed by Jessie J alongside the current members of Queen, with footage of Freddie Mercury included as a tribute to the late singer. In addition to the studio version, a more intense variant existed, featuring elements of heavy metal, commonly known as «We Will Rock You (Fast)». This version features a faster drum track, a rhythm guitar part and a solo midway through the song, and concludes with rapid strikes by Roger Taylor on the hi-hat and snare drum, followed by rolls and hits on the crash cymbals. It was used as the opening of concerts on tours spanning from the News of the World Tour to the Hot Space Tour, generally followed by «Let Me Entertain You» —from the 1978 album Jazz— or «Brighton Rock» —from the 1974 album Sheer Heart Attack—. From The Works Tour of 1984 onwards, this version was no longer played live.
