The story behind
Voyage, voyage, according to DoReSol
Desireless's song "Voyage, voyage" became a global phenomenon, transcending borders and genres since its release in 1986. This 4:21-minute single quickly climbed to the top of numerous European and Asian charts, including Russia, and became an instant hit in clubs. Its impact was such that it sold over five million copies. Interestingly, although it initially peaked at No. 53 on the charts, a remix known as the “Britmix,” produced in 1988 by P. Hammond and P. Waterman of PWL, boosted its popularity and propelled it to new heights.
Behind “Desireless” is Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop, born on Christmas Day in 1952. Before finding her calling in music, Claudie explored a career as a fashion designer and took several trips to India in 1980. Her musical journey began in 1984, when she met producer Jean-Michel Rivat, with whom she began collaborating. A year later, in 1985, she met François Tabah, a renowned French composer, with whom she would share her life for eighteen years. The release of *Voyage, voyage* in 1986 marked a turning point in her career. Previously, Claudie had been a member of the band Air 89 and had released singles such as “Chercher l’Amour Fou” and “Qui Peut Savoir” under the name “Air” (distinct from the later electro act “Air”). The success of *Voyage, voyage* was pivotal for her project as Desireless. In 1989, she released her debut album in French, *François*, whose title was a tribute to her partner, François Tabah. This album was reissued in 2001 and featured mixing by Dominique Blanc-Francard and production by Jean-Michel Rivat. In 1990, the birth of her daughter led her to take a temporary break from the entertainment world. Her second album, *I Love You*, was released in 1992, on which Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop explored various styles and contributed to the composition of many of the tracks. Since then, she has adopted a more personal approach to her music, moving away from large-scale commercial productions, and continues to perform with various collaborators, exploring styles ranging from electronic music.
