The story behind
Vegetable, according to DoReSol
The song Vegetable by Radiohead stands out for its exploration of personal tensions that arise with success. Although the band has never formally explained its meaning, it is believed to address the difficulties Thom Yorke faced in his relationships with friends after the band signed their contract. This theme of introspection and vulnerability is felt in the music, which combines enveloping melodies with a somewhat melancholic atmosphere. The song was a live favorite in their early years, though it disappeared from setlists around the summer of 1995.
Recorded over a three-week period in 1992 at the Chipping Norton Recording Studios, Vegetable is part of the debut album Pablo Honey, released in 1993. Production was handled by Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie, who also managed the mixing. During recording, the band faced challenges due to their inexperience in the studio, which influenced the raw and authentic sound that characterizes this piece. Although Pablo Honey did not have an immediate impact, time has granted Vegetable and other songs from the album a place in the history of alternative rock.
