The story behind
You, according to DoReSol
The song You by Radiohead stands out for its emotional intensity and obsessive themes about love. Originally, this piece appeared on a demo called Manic Hedgehog, when the band was still going by the name “On a Friday”. Later, it was recorded at Courtyard Studio in Oxford, where other tracks for the EP Manic Hedgehog Drill were also worked on. The version eventually included in the album Pablo Honey features some variations in the lyrics, making it unique within their repertoire.
The album Pablo Honey, released in 1993, was the band’s first studio work and was recorded over a three-week period at Chipping Norton Recording Studios. Production was handled by Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie, who also oversaw the mixing. During the recording process, Radiohead faced challenges due to their lack of studio experience, but this did not prevent them from capturing a fresh and distinctive sound. You is a clear example of Thom Yorke’s vocal talent, showcasing his range with a powerful C5 during the guitar solo. This song, along with other singles like “Creep” and “Anyone Can Play Guitar”, helped establish the band in the music scene, though initially Creep did not achieve immediate success.
