The story behind
The song Tu pelo, by La Oreja de Van Gogh, is taken from their second album, El viaje de Copperpot, released on September 11, 2000. This record marked a turning point for the band, moving slightly away from the more characteristic sound of San Sebastián, known as Donosti Sound, to explore a style closer to Power Pop. The formula proved successful, combining catchy melodies with lyrics that, in general, convey a sense of lightness and carefree spirit. The album's title, incidentally, has a curious reference to the film The Goonies (1985), mentioning a character named Chester Copperpot.
El viaje de Copperpot became the group's best-selling and most popular work up to that point, and for many, their masterpiece. The band, originally from San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain, had formally begun their journey in 1996. Initially composed of Pablo Benegas, Álvaro Fuentes, Xabi San Martín, Haritz Garde, and vocalist Amaia Montero, who would later embark on her solo career in 2007, making way for Leire Martínez on vocals since 2008. While commonly associated with pop-rock, their music has successfully incorporated elements from genres as diverse as ranchera, bossa nova, and electronic music, demonstrating a versatility that has resonated not only in Latin America and the United States, but also in Europe.
