The story behind
Radiohead recorded The Bends in 1994 and 1995, after a tour through the United States. The album began in London, at the RAK Studios, and then moved to Abbey Road and Manor. The pressure from Parlophone to repeat the success of «Creep» complicated the process. The work finished in March 1995. The band collaborated for the first time with Nigel Godrich and Stanley Donwood, who stayed with them. The album mixes guitar and ballads, with more enigmatic lyrics than in Pablo Honey. They released several singles, including «Street Spirit (Fade Out)», which reached the Top 5 in the United Kingdom. The tour was long, with stops in the United States as opening acts for R.E.M. and Alanis Morissette. The album reached number four in the UK, but did not surpass the success of «Creep» in the United States.
