The story behind

When Phil Collins set out to create the album …But Seriously in 1989, he was coming off an intense period. He had finished touring with Genesis in 1987, and the band went on a four-year hiatus. During that time, Collins even ventured into acting in the film *Buster* in 1988. By the spring of 1989, he already had the compositions ready for his new solo work. Unlike his previous album, 1985's No Jacket Required, which had a more danceable focus, this new material explored deeper lyrical themes, touching on socioeconomic and political aspects. The song That’s Just the Way It Is, with its 5:20 duration, became one of the central pieces of this album, produced alongside Hugh Padgham.

The album …But Seriously was a worldwide commercial success. It reached number 1 in the UK and the US, remaining at the top for 15 and four non-consecutive weeks, respectively. Phil Collins' solo career sales, according to Atlantic Records data from 2002, exceeded 150 million records worldwide. From a very young age, Collins showed an innate connection with music. At five years old, a Christmas gift, a toy drum kit, ignited his passion. He learned by observing and listening to television and radio, developing his own method for understanding music, as he did not learn to read conventional sheet music. His formal training began at fourteen at the Barbara Speake Stage School, where he also explored acting, participating in productions like Oliver! and films such as The Beatles – A Hard Day’s Night and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
