The story behind

Something Happened on the Way to Heaven, according to DoReSol

When you dive into Something Happened on the Way to Heaven, you encounter a song that, although its title doesn't appear until well into the second verse, is instantly recognizable by its catchy chorus: 'How many times can I say I'm sorry?'. This melody, released in April 1990, was part of the album ...But Seriously, released a year earlier. The track climbed to number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 in October 1990 and reached fifteenth place in the United Kingdom. A live version of this piece was also included on the album Serious Hits... Live!.

The composition of Something Happened on the Way to Heaven is the work of Phil Collins and Daryl Stuermer, who has been a long-time guitarist for Collins and Genesis. The production was handled by Collins along with Hugh Padgham. Interestingly, the song originated as part of the soundtrack for the film The War of the Roses. The cover art for the international single was inspired by an image from the 1946 film A Matter of Life and Death, known in the United States as Stairway to Heaven, a work by Powell and Pressburger. The music video, directed by Jim Yukich, features a peculiar narrative where a dog dreams of being a silent film hero, and while exploring a concert venue, interacts with Collins and his band during a rehearsal.
