The story behind

The first time I heard Tango, I was hooked by that melodic twist that repeats like an echo between the measures. It’s not a standard waltz, but something more playful, with that mix of lightness and mischief that makes the ear unable to let go. The song unfolds with a rhythm that seems to dance on itself, as if each note had a life of its own and knew exactly when to fall back. That sense of constant, almost hypnotic movement is what makes Tango stand out among the rest of the album’s tracks: it doesn’t sound like a recorded song, but like a scene unfolding in real time.

The album Lucio Dalla, where Tango appears, was recorded at the Stone Castle Studios in Carimate in 1979. It was produced by Alessandro Colombini and Renzo Cremonini, two names who at the time were already well acquainted with the artist’s sound. Lucio Dalla had just come off three albums co-written with the lyricist Roberto Roversi, but here a shift is noticeable: the musician takes full control of his lyrics, filling them with nuances that hadn’t been there before. The result was a trio of albums — alongside Come è profondo il mare (1977) and Dalla (1980) — which critics dubbed his "trilogy of maturity." Tango is not just another song in that sequence: it’s the moment when the artist solidifies his voice as a soloist, with that blend of jazz, Italian melody, and a touch of vocal rebellion that always defined him. It lasted exactly four minutes, but within that time, unexpected twists unfold, like the vocal runs Dalla improvised in his performances, inspired by Adriano Celentano’s scat style and the raw energy of James Brown.
