Fun facts

REO Speedwagon released "Take It on the Run" in 1980, as the second track on their album *Hi Infidelity*. The song was written by the lead guitarist, Gary Richrath. It was the song that followed "Keep On Loving You", which was their most popular song. The single became platinum in 1989. The song appeared on many compilation albums, both by other artists and by REO Speedwagon. In 2017, Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias used it in "Messin' Around".

The story behind

REO Speedwagon released this song in 1981, as the second single from their album Hi Infidelity. It was written by Gary Richrath, the lead guitarist, and recorded in 1980. The lyrics tell a story of distrust: someone suspects their partner is cheating, but doesn't fully believe it. If it were true, he says he wouldn't want to be around anymore.

The original title was "Don't Let Me Down", but Kevin Cronin, the vocalist, changed it to "Take It on the Run". He liked the opening line: “I heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend…”, which gave it a touch of mystery. The song became a hit, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and also in the United Kingdom. Its video was shown on the first day of MTV, but was cut off after 12 seconds due to technical problems.
