The story behind

This song was born in a test drawer. Superextraño appeared in 1988 as part of a fourteen-track demo that Fito Páez put together for a soundtrack that never saw the light of day. The project was shelved due to funding issues, but those recordings—made with whatever was at hand—ended up holding seeds of what was to come. Three of those tracks, with different names and arrangements, would later appear on official albums years later: Circo Beat (1994), Sol en Cinco (1995), and a children's album called Piojos y piojitos (1991). This speaks to a time when Fito was testing ideas without knowing which ones would survive.

The original version of Superextraño lasts three minutes and forty-one seconds, long enough for the piano and drums to intertwine in a rhythm that seems to escape any known time signature. There are no records of how it was recorded, but the raw sound of the demo suggests it was quick, with no corrections. By the time Fito released Circo Beat six years later, he had moved past that experimental stage, yet this song remains a testament to those early attempts. Later, his career took off with albums like El amor después del amor (1992) and Circo Beat (1994), which together sold over a million copies and earned him international recognition. He even won five Latin Grammy Awards, including one in 2000 for Abre and another for the song Al lado del camino. In 1995, the Konex Foundation awarded him the Konex Platinum Prize as the best rock composer of the decade in Argentina. But it all started with recordings like this, where the experimental and the intuitive blended without filters.
