The story behind
This song was born in a time of trial, when Fito Páez gathered loose ideas for a film soundtrack that was never made. What remained was Brujas Salem de Prix, a track that today sounds like an echo of those days when the musician was experimenting with sounds without knowing that some of those recordings would end up in a drawer. The original version, included in an informal demo from 1988 called Novela, lasts 3:36 and shares space with other pieces that later took different paths: some became hits on subsequent albums, such as Circo Beat (1994), while others turned into versions for children or songs by other artists. But this one, in particular, remained as a raw, unfiltered record of how an idea sounds when it still has no defined shape.
What’s curious is that, although Brujas Salem de Prix had no official release at the time, it ended up being part of the material Fito kept and that, years later, some fans rediscovered. There are no records of it being intended for a mass audience; rather, it seems like a workshop exercise, where the important thing was to capture an atmosphere before it vanished. That said, among those 14 tracks on the demo, there are songs that did transcend: As de Poker ended up on Circo Beat, Novela became Nada es para siempre in the voice of Fabiana Cantilo, and even Las brujitas found its place on a children’s album. But Brujas Salem de Prix remains there, like a fragment of a puzzle that was never fully assembled.
