The story behind

This short piece, lasting less than three minutes, carries an air of a musical workshop. Maldivina y Turbialuz sounds like a sketch that was recorded on tape, a recording that Fito Páez kept on a 1988 cassette without imagining that some of its melodies would later end up on official albums. The original recording, just two minutes and fifty-nine seconds long, has that weight of the incomplete yet revealing: it’s the footprint of a moment when the artist was testing ideas for a soundtrack that was never filmed, due to budget issues in a short film project.

What’s curious is that, despite its modest origins, three of its themes ended up elsewhere. What here sounds like As de Poker was reworked for Circo Beat in 1994; Novela became Nada es para siempre in the voice of Fabiana Cantilo on the album Sol en Cinco (1995); and another of its lines, transformed into Ay, ended up on a children’s album called Piojos y piojitos in 1991. It’s not common for a demo to be distributed this way, as if time itself had taken those melodies and given them other destinies. In that era, Fito Páez had not yet crossed into the mainstream scene that would cement his fame with El amor después del amor and Circo Beat, but he was already leaving clues of what was to come: a sound that blended Rosarino folk with a piano that seems to seek its place between the intimate and the epic.
