The story behind

Spit, according to DoReSol

Sepultura recorded Spit in a studio in Brazil during the Roots sessions, the album that marked their return to the roots of their homeland. The song, with its 2:46 duration, is no ordinary track: the opening riff is built on a repetitive pattern that later intertwines with tribal percussion, creating a contrast between the harshness of metal and the organic energy of Brazilian rhythms. It is no coincidence that the sound here is different from what they had been doing: the album sought to explore the deepest Brazil, and Spit is one of the clearest examples of that fusion.

The album was recorded in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, with production by Ross Robinson and the band, while the mixing was handled by Andy Wallace and Steve Sisco. Engineers Rob Agnello, Chuck Johnson and Richard Kaplan captured a raw, unfiltered sound where Igor Cavalera's drums and Andreas Kisser's guitars coexist with key collaborations such as those of Carlinhos Brown, who contributed percussion arrangements that gave it that distinctive tribal feel. The result was an album that, upon its release in Europe in February 1996 and three weeks later in the United States, redefined the band's sound and solidified them as one of the few metal acts with global reach.
