The story behind
Cut‐Throat, according to DoReSol
Cut-Throat by Sepultura is that moment when Brazilian metal stands before you with a rhythm that doesn't ask for permission. It's not a song that drags on nor one that flies: it's a sharp blow, a warning in the form of a song. The drums hit like a machete in the jungle, the riffs dig in with precision, and Max Cavalera's voice sounds closer to a tribal scream than to a conventional heavy metal howl. What surprises most is not its speed, but how it makes every note breathe within a beat that feels organic, as if the song had been carved from wood instead of recorded in a studio.
The track was born at the very moment Sepultura decided to fully immerse themselves in the roots of their country. Recorded in Brazil during the Roots sessions, it featured the expert hand of Carlinhos Brown, who shaped the group percussion passages to sound like a ritual. Engineers Rob Agnello, Chuck Johnson, and Richard Kaplan captured that controlled chaos, while Steve Sisco and Andy Wallace polished it without losing the grit of the sound. At just 2:45 in length, Cut-Throat needs no more time: its structure is as direct as a machete strike.
