The story behind

Slow Country, according to DoReSol

The song “Slow Country,” one of the tracks on Gorillaz’s debut album, stands out for a particular sonic detail: its rhythm track and the accompanying wind effect come from a sample taken from the beginning of “Ghost Town,” a song by The Specials. This fusion of elements, which lasts three minutes and thirty-seven seconds, was crafted by a production team that included Jason Cox, Dan the Automator, Tom Girling, and Gorillaz themselves, with Jason Cox and Tom Girling also handling the recording engineering.

The track is part of the band’s debut album, titled *Gorillaz*, which was released on March 26, 2001, via Parlophone in the United Kingdom. This album not only reached number three on the British music charts but also sold around seven million copies worldwide—a success that led to Gorillaz being recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful virtual band. The album, which also includes singles such as “Tomorrow Comes Today,” “Clint Eastwood,” “19-2000,” and “Rock the House,” is a clear example of the band’s sonic experimentation, exploring a wide range of genres ranging from trip-hop and rap rock to art rock, hip-hop, dub, reggae, Latin music, psychedelic music, and punk rock. Gorillaz, conceived in 1998 by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, is represented by its four fictional members—2-D, Noodle, Murdoc Niccals, and Russel Hobbs—whose story is told through animated music videos and short films. In reality, Damon Albarn is the only permanent musician, although Remi Kabaka Jr., who for years was the voice of Russel Hobbs, officially joined in 2016 and was named a member alongside Albarn and Hewlett in 2019—a moment documented in *Gorillaz: Reject False Icons.
