The story behind
The song 5/4 by Gorillaz, which is the second track from their self-titled debut album released in 2001, hides a particular rhythmic detail in its title. Although much of the composition unfolds in a 4/4 time signature, the name directly references Noodle's distinctive guitar riff, which moves in an unusual 5/4. This rhythmic contrast gives the piece a unique energy, framed within a sound that fuses elements of garage rock and pop. Interestingly, 5/4 was almost the album's second single, following Clint Eastwood, but was replaced at the last minute by 19-2000.
Behind this sonic proposal are Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, who in 1998 brought Gorillaz to life as a virtual band, populated by animated characters such as Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs. This visual concept is so central that, although the music video for 5/4 was never completed, its sketches were included in the 2002 DVD Phase One: Celebrity Take Down, revealing a narrative where Murdoc attempts a failed stunt. The song's production was handled by Dan the Automator, along with Gorillaz, Jason Cox, and Tom Girling, with Cox and Girling also on recording engineering. Over the years, 5/4 has been part of the band's live repertoire, being performed on their first tour and revisited on the Humanz Tour, where Jehnny Beth took over lead vocals.
