The story behind
This short but intense song was born in a time of trial. Sale el Sol is one of those pieces that Fito recorded on a demo tape around 1988, when he was still trying to shape ideas that would later end up in other projects. It wasn't an album meant for the market, but a draft where the musician tested melodies for a soundtrack that was never finished due to lack of funds. Out of its fourteen tracks, three would end up having another fate: Circo Beat would become the title of an album years later, Nada would be recorded by Fabiana Cantilo under another name, and Las brujitas would end up on a children's album under the title Ay. The original version of Sale el Sol remained there, with its 2:38 duration, as a fragment that survived the test of time.
What's interesting is not just that it's a rarity in his early discography, but how that material ended up being the seed for more well-known songs. Fito, who had already come from Trova rosarina and a stage of critical recognition, had not yet crossed the threshold where the mass public would adopt him. By the time Circo Beat (1994) and El amor después del amor (1992) positioned him as a central figure in Argentine rock, these songs had already mutated, but retained the essence of his style: lyrics that blended the poetic with the everyday, and a piano that always knew how to carry the lead voice. The Konex Foundation awarded him a Premio Konex de Platino in 1995 for his work as a composer, and later came the Latin Grammy Awards in 2000, 2007, 2008, and 2009, but this 1988 demo is a piece of his process that is rarely heard. If you ever come across it, it's worth paying attention: it's not just a draft, it's the shadow of what was to come.
