«Proud Mary», also known as «Rolling on the River», is a song composed by American musician John Fogerty. The rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, in which Fogerty serves as lead guitarist and vocalist, first recorded it for their 1969 album, Bayou Country. The single was released on January 9, 1969, and quickly became the group's first major hit, reaching number 2 on the Billboard charts, although some other charts placed it at number 1. The song's title refers to a boat called "Proud Mary". The song was part of Elvis Presley's repertoire during his 1972 tour, known as Elvis on Tour, with his performance at Madison Square Garden that same year standing out. Prior to this, Elvis had already recorded the song in 1970 for the album Elvis on Stage. Tina Turner also recorded her own version of the song, giving it a faster rhythm than the original. The lyrics tell the story of a person who, after working hard in Memphis and New Orleans, decides to leave a good job in the city to work on a steamboat called "Proud Mary". The chorus repeats the phrase "Big wheel keep on turning, Proud Mary keep on burning", which refers to the boat's paddle wheel continuously turning as the vessel moves along the river. The verses of the song reflect the customs of the working class in the southern United States and the possibility of finding employment in the Mississippi region for those with limited resources, while also highlighting the hospitality of the people of the area, despite their humble circumstances. The lyrics include the line "You don't have to worry 'cause you have no money. People on the river are happy to give". «Proud Mary» is one of the most covered songs by Creedence Clearwater Revival, with more than 100 different versions.
