The story behind
Pop, according to DoReSol
The song *Pop* by La Oreja de Van Gogh has a playful vibe that is even reflected in its music video. In it, we see Amaia Montero playing an exaggerated Marilyn Monroe, with comedic gestures and an apparent lack of interest in vocal performance, while the rest of the band appears dressed in white, with platinum blonde hair and tans, providing backing vocals. As a contrast, there is another scene where they appear more casually, lip-syncing the main performance. This clip became one of the group's most viewed on YouTube and was also included in the DVD of their 2003 tour and in the compilation Grandes Éxitos. The single was released as a promotional track, and its cover featured Amaia Montero smoking.
This song belongs to El viaje de Copperpot, the band's second studio album, released in 2000. The album's title is inspired by the film Los Goonies, referencing a character named Chester Copperpot. With this work, La Oreja de Van Gogh moved slightly away from the sound that defined their origins, the "Donosti Sound", to explore more of the "Power pop", characterized by catchy melodies and lighthearted lyrics. The album was a great success, becoming the group's best-selling record and one of the most acclaimed in their career. The band, originally from San Sebastián, began their musical journey in 1996 and, although they are associated with pop-rock, have managed to incorporate influences from genres as diverse as ranchera, bossa nova, or electronic music into their work.
