The story behind

Passe em casa, according to DoReSol

Before Tribalistas existed as a project, there was already a years-long bond between Marisa Monte, Arnaldo Antunes and Carlinhos Brown. In 1989, Marisa recorded Comida, a cover of a Titãs song where Antunes was the lead vocalist. By 1991, Antunes had already written songs for Monte for the album Mais. The creative connection continued to grow, even though each lived in a different city: Monte in Rio de Janeiro, Antunes in São Paulo and Brown in Salvador. Despite the distance, the exchange of ideas never stopped.

In 2002, after more than a decade of occasional collaborations, the three came together to record an album together. The result was Tribalistas, released in Brazil in November of that year and worldwide the following year. The album took off quickly: without promotions or interviews, it sold 1.5 million copies in Brazil and reached number one on the charts. Among the standout tracks was Passe em casa, a 3:54 song that, like the rest of the album, emerged from sessions where the distance between them dissolved into the sound. The recording wasn’t about technical perfection, but capturing the energy of those improvised meetings.
