The story behind

The story behind Oxford Town dates back to a call from Broadside magazine in 1962. They were looking for songs inspired by a major news event of that year: the tension generated by the enrollment of a Black student, James Meredith, at the University of Mississippi. Although the song does not directly name Meredith or the institution, it powerfully alludes to the situation. Bob Dylan himself commented in an interview that, while it dealt with the Meredith case, it also transcended that specific moment, feeling that the lyrics remained relevant. The composition was recorded on December 6, 1962, at Columbia Records' Studio A, and was included on his second album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, released in May 1963.

In addition to its appearance on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Dylan recorded a version for the Broadside Sessions in November 1962 and a demo for his publisher in March 1963, which would be released much later, in 2010, on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 – The Witmark Demos: 1962–1964. The song, a Folk genre with a duration of 1:50, has had a life beyond its original recordings. It was performed live only once, on October 25, 1990, on the very campus of the University of Mississippi. Over the years, other artists have covered Oxford Town, including Richie Havens in 1966, Tim O'Brien in 1996, the band Crooked Still in 2006, and Hugues Aufray, who released a French version in 1965 and re-recorded it in 1995.
