The story behind
This song sounds like a possible future where the human and the artificial blend without warning. Rosalía Vila Tobella, from Sant Esteve Sesrovires, Barcelona, takes flamenco into a territory where traditional rhythms coexist with electronic textures that seem straight out of a science fiction film. In Novia robot, there is no room for convention: the artist’s voice splits between a robotic whisper and a flamenco lament, while the percussion sets a pulse that never quite fits into standard measures. It’s as if the song breathes in a 7/8 time signature, just enough for the listener to feel something isn’t quite right, yet unable to pinpoint what it is.
She recorded it in 2018, the same year Rosalía dominated the Latin Grammy Awards with El Mal Querer, an album that redefined what flamenco could be today. It wasn’t a project designed to be commercial: it emerged from blending the ancestral with the most avant-garde, using borrowed equipment and sessions that stretched until the sound felt like something that didn’t yet exist.
