The story behind

The lyrics of Reliquia do not speak of sacred objects or devotion, but of something more personal: Rosalía defines herself as an object without an owner, as a fragment that does not belong to her. The song revolves around the idea of the death of Jesus, but not from solemnity, rather from the paradox that, even after resurrecting, His body remained marked as a relic. There is something in that image—a body that does not decay—that Rosalía uses to question her own identity: if she is a symbol, who decides what it means?

The track was born in the context of LUX, the singer’s fourth album, and was released as a preview two days before its full premiere. The recording featured Caroline Shaw as arranger and a mixing team that included Ramiro Fernandez-Seoane, Francesco di Giovanni, and Manny Marroquin, while production was handled by Noah Goldstein, David Rodríguez, and Rosalía herself. The song lasts three minutes and fifty seconds, yet within that time it condenses a reflection on the ephemeral and the sacred, inspired by Saint Teresa of Ávila, whose incorrupt hand—according to tradition—ended up in the possession of Franco after her death. In 2018, Rosalía had already amassed five Latin Grammy Awards, but Reliquia does not seek to be an anthem; instead, it is an object in itself: something to be heard and kept.
