The story behind

There's something about Necesito de ti that makes it sound different from what Shakira recorded later. It's not just that it sounds like a teenager writing about her first loves in Barranquilla, but the song captures that mix of shyness and urgency that only comes from texts written with the heart in hand. The song progresses with a melody that seems to draw the sway of the waves on the Caribbean coast, where the artist grew up, and in that sway lies a guitar riff that repeats a simple yet catchy progression, as if each note carried the weight of a secret shared in a whisper. The song lasts just over three minutes, but in that time it manages to condense the emotion of someone who, for the first time, feels they cannot live without someone, no matter how fleeting that feeling may seem.

Shakira wrote it before turning fourteen, when she had not yet lived a decade but already had half a lifetime composing. The album Magia, where it first appeared, was released in 1991 under the label Sony Music Colombia, but its launch was complicated: printed copies arrived late, production never fully came together, and in the end, only twelve hundred records circulated. Yet, on those vinyl pages, the first serious attempt of an artist who would later break records on international charts was preserved. The song itself was not a standout track, but it was a seed of what was to come when, years later, the same voice that sang about needing someone in Necesito de ti would dominate with Laundry Service and other global hits.
