The story behind

This song sounds like nothing but itself. Memória is a journey in Portuguese where Rosalía lets herself be carried by the voice of Carminho, that fadista who lent her smoky timbre to build something that seems to come apart and reassemble with each repetition. It’s not a song you listen to: you feel it. There’s something in the way Rosalía lets the words slide between whispers and contained shouts, as if each line were a memory resisting stillness. The arrangement, signed by Caroline Shaw, plays with that instability, using strings that stretch and contract without warning, as if time itself had a short memory.

The recording was born from a chance discovery. Rosalía heard in a demo by Carminho that melody that reminded her of what she was looking for for LUX: something that spoke of how memories warp over time, of that truth that only exists in the moment it’s told. What began as a fragment became the heart of the album, not by design, but because it fit like a sigh. The producers Noah Goldstein and Rosalía herself, alongside Shaw, shaped that controlled chaos: the mix, with Ramiro Fernandez-Seoane, Francesco di Giovanni, and Manny Marroquin at the helm, balances the intimate with the epic, as if fado and modern pop shook hands without losing their essence. In 2018, when LUX was released, Memória had already been echoing in the minds of those who heard it for months, like a half-shared secret. And though it wasn’t the most awarded track on the album, it was one of those that sticks, not for its rhythm, but for what it evokes: that blend of vulnerability and pride in saying, “This is what I lived, and this is my version.”
