The story behind

Gerry Rafferty wrote Mattie's Rag in 1978, when he had already been away from releasing solo material for some time. The song is part of the album City to City, which was released in January of that year. It was his first solo album in six years, and the first he had released since 1975, because he was in Stealers Wheel and there were legal issues. The song lasts three and a half minutes, and on Last.fm, more than 34 thousand people listen to it. It is not his most famous song, but it remains a piece that is played calmly, as if telling a story about the life of someone who stays in their place.
