Gerry Rafferty wrote and recorded "Right Down the Line" in 1977, in a recording studio in Oxfordshire. The song was released as a single in the United States in July 1978, shortly after "Baker Street", his first success as a solo artist. At that time, Rafferty already had some experience, but he was still playing with his band, the Stealers Wheel, and had had legal problems that kept him away from music for a while.
The song was recorded in a recording studio in England, and was released on the album City to City, which was well received.
