Fun facts

Gerry Rafferty released "Baker Street" in February 1978. The song became famous for that saxophone riff that starts like a heartbeat. He wrote and played it himself, but left it in the hands of Raphael Ravenscroft. It reached the top three in England, the United States and other countries. In 1979 he won an Ivor Novello award for the best song in both musical and lyrical categories.

The story behind

Gerry Rafferty wrote "Baker Street" in 1978, when he was no longer with the band Stealers Wheel. After a legal conflict that left him unable to make music for three years, he released this solo album, City to City, which was his first work in six. The song was recorded in London, and the saxophone was played by Raphael Ravenscroft. It reached number 3 in the UK and number 2 in the US.

The song talks about a street in London, but also about a journey, a place that reminds you of something. The 1992 version was recorded by Undercover, and in 1998 Foo Fighters played it with guitar instead of saxophone. It's a song that is heard in many places, but always has that touch of nostalgia and movement.
