The story behind
Marylou, according to DoReSol
The song Marylou by Ultraje a Rigor is a short but intense track, with an exact duration of 2:18 that does not diminish the strength of its message. The repetitive and catchy opening riff works like a hook that grabs you from the first seconds, while the drums set a rhythm that seems to speed up without losing cohesion. It is not the typical Brazilian rock song of the eighties: it has a more direct feel, almost punk in its rawness, but with a melodic touch that makes it accessible without falling into convention. The lyrics, for their part, play with everyday images and sharp humor that ends up being the band's trademark.
The album Nós Vamos Invadir Sua Praia, released in 1985, was Ultraje a Rigor's debut and the only one featuring guitarist Carlo "Carlinhos" Bartolini, who left before recording the next album. The LP's title, according to producer Pena Schmidt, was a provocation from São Paulo bands toward those from Rio, but the song Marylou distances itself from that context: its lyrics do not speak of invasions or rivalries, but of something more personal and everyday. The Nas Nuvens studio, where it was recorded, was a key place for Paulista rock at the time, and this track, along with others like Inútil or Eu Me Amo, helped the album reach platinum status in Brazil.
