The story behind
Mariposa, according to DoReSol
The song Mariposa by La Oreja de Van Gogh, with its 4 minutes and 2 seconds duration, is from El viaje de Copperpot, their second album released on September 11, 2000. This record marked a turning point for the group, moving slightly away from the characteristic "Donosti Sound" to explore *power pop*. The catchy melodies and lyrics conveying a sense of carefree spirit were the pillars that supported the success of this work. The album title, El viaje de Copperpot, has a curious connection to the 1985 film, The Goonies, referencing a character named Chester Copperpot. This album became the band's best-selling and most popular, considered by many as their masterpiece.
La Oreja de Van Gogh, originally from San Sebastián in the Basque Country, began their musical journey in 1996. The initial lineup included Pablo Benegas, Álvaro Fuentes, Xabi San Martín, Haritz Garde, and the voice of Amaia Montero, who left the group in 2007 to pursue a solo career. Since 2008, Leire Martínez has been the vocalist. While commonly associated with *pop-rock*, the band has demonstrated great versatility, experimenting with genres such as ranchera, bossa nova, dance, electronic, and rock throughout their productions. Their music has resonated in Latin America, the United States, and several European countries, such as France and Italy, although their impact in the latter may have been affected by the 2008 economic crisis, which coincided with Amaia Montero's departure.
Despite this, the band has toured and performed concerts in cities like Paris, playing in venues such as La Cigale and L'Olympia, and has explored stages in Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
