The story behind
Main Title Theme (Billy), according to DoReSol
The piece Main Title Theme (Billy), with its 6:06 duration, was created by Bob Dylan as part of the soundtrack for Sam Peckinpah's film, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. This work, released in 1973 by Columbia Records, marked Dylan's first soundtrack album. He himself had a role in the film, playing the character named "Alias". The music on the album primarily focuses on instrumental compositions, directly inspired by the cinematic narrative.
The connection between Dylan and the project arose through Rudy Wurlitzer, who wrote the film's screenplay and already knew the musician. Wurlitzer asked Dylan to contribute some songs for the film. Dylan presented his song "Billy" to director Peckinpah, who was impressed. The album containing this piece, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, reached number 16 on the charts in the United States and 29 in the United Kingdom. It was recorded with sound engineering by Dan Wallin and production by Gordon Carroll.
