The story behind

The piece Billy 1, which is part of the 1973 album Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, has an interesting story behind it. Originally, the film's screenwriter, Rudy Wurlitzer, knew Bob Dylan and asked him to create some songs for the film. Dylan presented a piece called Billy to director Sam Peckinpah, who was impressed. This recording, with music composed by Túlio Mourão, became part of a soundtrack that mostly consisted of instrumental themes, directly inspired by the film's atmosphere. The complete album, released by Columbia Records, also included the famous Knockin' on Heaven's Door, which was well-received on both sides of the Atlantic.

The recording of Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid was made with Dan Wallin as sound engineer and under the production of Gordon Carroll. The album itself reached number 16 on the US charts and 29 in the UK, eventually being certified gold. Bob Dylan, born Robert Allen Zimmerman in Duluth, Minnesota, was already a prominent figure in popular music since the 1960s, known for his folk compositions with social content like Blowin' in the Wind and A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall. Later, in 1965, his album Highway 61 Revisited marked a turning point, fusing rock with complex lyrics. The single Like a Rolling Stone was even recognized by Rolling Stone magazine as the best song of all time. Throughout his career, Dylan explored various genres, from the rock and blues of Blonde on Blonde to the country rock of Nashville Skyline, and had notable commercial success in the 1970s with albums like Planet Waves and Blood on the Tracks.
