The story behind

Djavan's Luz, released in 1982, is an album that was conceived at an interesting crossroads. The idea was to bring the music of this Brazilian artist, known for fusing South American rhythms with African influences, to an audience in the United States. Thus, Djavan traveled to that country, invited by CBS Records (now Sony Music), where he had the opportunity to work with producer Ronnie Foster. It was in this environment, in Los Angeles, that a particular encounter took place: Stevie Wonder participated in the recording of the song Samurai, contributing his talent. Although the album did not achieve massive success on American soil, it did resonate strongly in his homeland, selling half a million copies in Brazil by the fall of 1984.

Djavan's career up to that point already showed constant evolution. Born in 1949 in Maceió, in the state of Alagoas, his musical beginnings included forming a group called Luz, Som, Dimensão, where they performed covers of The Beatles. After moving to Rio de Janeiro in 1973, he began performing in nightclubs. His career gained momentum after participating in festivals, which led him to record his first album in 1976, which contained the hit Flor de lis. Subsequent works consolidated his sound, incorporating those African influences that characterize him, and from which songs like Açaí, Samurai, and Sina emerged. Producer Ronnie Foster was a key player in the production of this Luz, shaping a sound that sought to connect different musical worlds.
