The story behind

Little Red Corvette, according to DoReSol

When one delves into Little Red Corvette, they encounter a story told through automotive metaphors, where a fleeting encounter with a free-spirited woman becomes the central focus. The song, released in 1983 as the second single from 1999, marked a milestone for the artist, being his highest-charting song in the United States up to that point, and the first to reach the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 6. It was also the first time a single of his performed better on the pop charts than on the R&B charts. The instrumentation combines a drum machine beat with a slow synthesizer build-up in the verses, which explodes into a powerful rock chorus. The backing vocals were performed by Lisa Coleman and Dez Dickerson, who also handles a guitar solo. The lyrics, which use the car imagery as a double entendre for sex and also evoke equestrian references, have been interpreted as a reflection on the ambivalence, vulnerability, and fear associated with casual relationships, exploring the physical, emotional, and psychological dimensions of the act.

The genesis of Little Red Corvette dates back to a moment of rest for the artist. After a long night of recording, he fell asleep in Lisa Coleman's car, a 1964 Mercury Montclair Marauder. Ideas for the lyrics came to him in fragments during this and other brief breaks, until he managed to complete the song without having slept. The basic recording took place on May 20, 1982, with mixing done between August 11 and 12 of the same year, in studios such as Kiowa Trail Home Studio and Sunset Sound. The track, which is classified within genres such as pop, post-disco, funk, rock, and dance-rock, has a duration of 5:02 on its album version. In January 1985, a reissue as a double A-side with 1999 took it to number two on the UK singles chart. Following the artist's passing in April 2016, Little Red Corvette returned to the charts, reaching number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and climbing to 20 the following week. It is estimated to have sold over 900,000 copies in the United States. The music video, directed by Bryan Greenberg and released in February 1983, was the artist's second to be aired on MTV.
