«Light My Fire» is a song by the American band The Doors, included on their first album, which was recorded in August 1966 and released to the public in January 1967. In 1967, the song reached number one on Billboard's Pop Singles chart, and was re-released in 1968, reaching number 87. Although the music and lyrics were composed by Robby Krieger, the credits are usually attributed to "The Doors". The introduction was added by keyboardist Ray Manzarek. The lyrics of the song describe a couple "reaching a climax", which can be interpreted as a reference to both sexual passion and drug-induced euphoria. This ambiguity led television host Ed Sullivan to request that the band modify the lyrics for their performance on his show. Although they initially agreed, Jim Morrison ultimately sang the original version. Numerous artists have covered «Light My Fire», both in recordings and in live performances. Among the most notable versions are those by Astrud Gilberto, Will Young (who reached number one in the United Kingdom), Amii Stewart (number 6 in the UK in 1979 and number 8 in the 1985 remix), José Feliciano (who won a Grammy in 1969 for best pop song of the year), Nancy Sinatra, Julie Driscoll & the Brian Auger Trinity, Santana, Shirley Bassey, Cibo Matto, Divididos, UB40, Massive Attack, Amorphis, Hide, Minnie Riperton, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Ananda Shankar and Train, whose version appears on the compilation Stoned Immaculate: The Music of The Doors. Even iconic Hollywood figures such as Marlene Dietrich and Mae West have performed the song. «Light My Fire» is a representative example of psychedelic rock and lays the groundwork for the jazz rock of the seventies, always with a strong blues influence. The extended and seemingly improvised solos are a notable characteristic, which led to the song being reduced from seven to three minutes for its radio version. The harmonic progression and catchy rhythm, especially Ray Manzarek's introduction, contributed to its success in the pop market. A memorable performance by The Doors took place on The Ed Sullivan Show, where they were asked to change a line in the lyrics to make it more suitable for a national audience. Although they promised to do so, Jim Morrison sang the original version, which angered Ed Sullivan, who refused to shake Morrison's hand and banned the band from the show. Morrison commented: "Hey, we just did the Sullivan show". Another anecdote related to the song involves the car company Buick, which wanted to use it in a commercial with the lyrics changed to "Come on, Buick, light my fire". They offered the group around 100,000 dollars, and although Densmore, Manzarek and Krieger agreed while Morrison was away, he broke the deal upon his return. The song was ranked number 35 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Singer and guitarist José Feliciano achieved international success with his version of «Light My Fire» in 1968, which combined American rock with Latin influences and elements of classical guitar and flamenco. This single contributed to the success of his album Feliciano!, which was nominated for several Grammy Awards. Feliciano's arrangement influenced many subsequent versions, including that of Will Young. Robby Krieger commented in an interview that Feliciano was key to the song becoming a classic, as his version inspired others to do the same.
