The story behind

The song La playa, with its catchy melody and lyrics evoking carefree feelings, became one of the most recognized songs by La Oreja de Van Gogh. This piece, which lasts 4 minutes and 8 seconds, is part of El viaje de Copperpot, the group's second studio album, released on September 11, 2000. The album title, incidentally, draws its inspiration from a character in the 1985 film The Goonies. This record work is not only the band's best-selling but is also considered by many to be their masterpiece, marking a shift towards power pop, though without completely abandoning the characteristic Donosti Sound. The group, originally from San Sebastián in the Basque Country, formally began their musical journey in 1996. Initially, the lineup included Pablo Benegas, Álvaro Fuentes, Xabi San Martín, Haritz Garde, and the voice of Amaia Montero, who would later embark on a solo career in 2007, being replaced by Leire Martínez from 2008. Throughout their career, La Oreja de Van Gogh has explored various genres, from pop-rock to ranchera, bossa nova, and electronic music. Their music has resonated in Latin America, the United States, and various parts of Europe, including France and Italy, even though in some of these markets promotion was affected by the 2008 economic crisis, coinciding with Amaia Montero's departure.
