The story behind

Küss mich fellfrosch, according to DoReSol

The album *Sehnsucht*, which features the song “Küss mich (Fellfrosch),” was released with a cover that was a statement in and of itself. Designed by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein, the cover featured images of the faces of Rammstein’s members, marked by what appeared to be instruments of torture. However, these items were actually original surgical instruments that had belonged to Ferdinand Sauerbruch, a renowned surgeon. This striking visual aesthetic—which even extended to a photo of a white-sand beach on the back cover—prepared the listener for the sonic intensity the German band delivered. “Küss mich (Fellfrosch),” which runs for three minutes and thirty-one seconds, is one of the tracks that forms part of this experience.

Released in Germany on August 22, 1997, and worldwide on August 25 of the same year by Motor Music Records, *Sehnsucht* was Rammstein’s second studio album and quickly achieved considerable success in Europe, reaching number one in their home country. The band, originally from Berlin, Germany, formed in 1994 and has maintained its original lineup ever since, with Till Lindemann on lead vocals, Richard Z. Kruspe and Paul H. Landers on guitars, Oliver “Ollie” Riedel on bass, Christoph “Doom” Schneider on drums and electronic percussion, and Christian “Flake” Lorenz on keyboards. This group is a leading figure in industrial metal and one of the most prominent bands of the Neue Deutsche Härte scene, alongside others such as Oomph!, Eisbrecher, and Die Krupps. For the recording of *Sehnsucht*, Rammstein worked on production alongside Bobo and Jacob Hellner, while Ronald Prent handled the mixing. Their focus on German lyrics and their live shows—known for their pyrotechnics and theatricality—have been key factors in their success; by 2009, they had sold over fifteen million albums worldwide, with their entire catalog released by Universal Music Group. The band’s name, incidentally, refers to the Ramstein air disaster, with an additional “m” that literally translates to “ramstone.”
